EU vehicle fleet: size and segment distribution
The European Union’s vehicle fleet counts 252.2 million cars and about 37.4 million commercial vehicles and buses.
Key observations
- In 2022, the EU car fleet grew by 1.1% compared to 2021, with 252.2 million cars on the road in total. The highest growth was seen in Romania (+3.3%) and Slovakia (+2.9%), while the Finnish car fleet shrank by 0.5%.
- About 30.2 million vans are in circulation throughout the European Union, half of which can be found in three countries: France (6.4 million vans), Italy (4.4 million), and Spain (4 million).
- There are about 6.5 million medium and heavy commercial vehicles on EU roads, up 1.9% compared to 2021. With around 1.2 million trucks, Poland has the largest fleet by far.
- 720,783 buses are in operation across the European Union, almost half of which can be found in three countries alone: Poland (128,677), Italy (100,014), and France (94,074).
